What is Fatty Liver Disease?

A healthy liver detoxifies the body and breaks down fat. When we develop fatty liver (hepatic lipidosis), this means that the normal liver cells are gradually filled with fat.

These abnormal cells can no longer function to perform the liver's work efficiently and, over time, the liver cells may be destroyed. As liver cells die, they are replaced with scar tissue.

As the liver function gradually decreases, we begin to show signs of liver disease.

Healthy Liver

Normal liver cells detoxify and process fats efficiently

Fat Accumulation

Liver cells gradually fill with fat, reducing efficiency

Cell Damage

Liver cells die and are replaced with scar tissue

Causes of Fatty Liver Disease

1

Obesity

People suffering from this disease are typically obese and sedentary. Excess body weight, particularly around the abdomen, significantly increases the risk of developing fatty liver disease.

2

Metabolic Disorders

Metabolic disorders, such as thyroid dysfunction and diabetes mellitus, may also cause fatty liver problems. These conditions affect how the body processes and stores fat.

3

Toxin Exposure (Long-term)

Often the liver is subjected to toxic injury from ingesting mycotoxins (from seeds), aflatoxins, plant toxins, and a variety of chemicals used in the home environment.

Common Household Toxins:

  • • Insecticides
  • • Pesticides
  • • Chemical solvents

4

Heredity

Genetic factors can predispose individuals to fatty liver disease. Family history of liver problems may increase your risk of developing this condition.

5

Infectious Diseases

Certain infectious diseases can contribute to the development of fatty liver disease by affecting liver function and causing inflammation in liver tissues.

Prevention Strategies

Lifestyle Modifications

  • Maintain a healthy weight through balanced diet
  • Engage in regular physical exercise
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Manage diabetes and metabolic disorders

Environmental Protection

  • Use non-toxic cleaning products
  • Avoid unnecessary pesticide exposure
  • Choose organic foods when possible
  • Ensure proper ventilation in living spaces
