Emergency Treatment for Burns (Pets)

Causes, Symptoms and Treatment for Bird Burns

Immediate Action Required

Burns from coming in contact with hot burners or pans should be treated immediately with cool, not icy, water, and provided with emergency veterinary care.

🏥 Supportive Care Until Veterinary Help is Available

1 Clean the Affected Areas

Thoroughly clean the affected body parts using a warm (tepid) saline solution.

2 Prevent Infection

As infection is the main problem, treat wounds regularly with:

  • Neosporin (with pain killer) or noncaustic iodine

⚠️ Important Neosporin Precautions:

  • • Use only when necessary (as assessed by a veterinarian)
  • • Only for bacterial infections - won't help if no bacterial infection present
  • Risk: Birds may peck and ingest the ointment
  • Risk: Ointment spreads on feathers, reducing insulation and causing chilling

3 Maintain Hydration & Electrolytes

Offer the patient unflavored Pedialyte (from the grocery store baby aisle) to drink. This will boost electrolytes and support recovery.

4 Natural Healing Treatments

🌿 Aloe Vera Juice/Gel

Applied topically, has a soothing and healing effect on wounds.

Note: Some rare birds may react to Aloe Vera. Test first by spraying on finger and touching bird's foot. Wait 24 hours to check for reactions.

🌸 Lavender Essential Oil

Rub affected areas with Young Living or Original Swiss Aromatics Lavender Essential Oil for natural healing properties.

5 Environmental Support

🏠 Hospital Cage Setup

  • • Place bird in a "hospital pen/cage"
  • • Keep warm and quiet
  • • Provide plenty of fluids
  • • Ensure patient is eating well
  • • Tube feeding may be necessary if not eating

🛡️ Safety Precautions

Keep patients away from other pets until wounds have healed to prevent other birds from picking at the injured bird.

📞 Remember: Emergency Veterinary Care is Essential

These supportive care measures are temporary solutions. Professional veterinary care should be sought immediately for proper assessment, treatment, and to prevent complications.
