Non-toxic Alternatives to Toxic Commercial Air Fresheners

Air Fresheners

Natural Room DeodorizersBelow are options for you to easily freshen your home with items you may already have ...

  • Deodorizers:

    • Make-your-own Air Freshener Spray:
      • Dissolve baking soda in 2 cups hot water, add lemon juice, pour into spray bottle, spray into air as air freshener
      • Fragrant Aromatherapy Mist (spray into air or linens): Mix 3 ounces of distilled water with 1 ounce of vodka and 50 drops of your favorite Essential oils. The vodka helps disperse the essential oils in the water. Pour into glass or PET plastic spray bottles.

    • Lavender Bouquets: Freshly picked Lavender (placed in water) or dried lavender bunches scent the rooms and are non-toxic. I found this plant easy to grow in Florida.

    • Place cloves, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans, allspice or other favorite scented spice in a pot of water, simmer for 1-2 hours. Then let it sit. Please note, if you have pets, using a covered container, like a tea kettle, is much safer.

    • Sprinkle a few drops of vanilla or essential oil on a cotton ball. Place this in a small open container to prevent the oil or alcohol from damaging your furniture.

    • Put a few slices of leftover orange or lemon rinds in a pot of water, simmer for 1-2 hours

    • Place lemon slices in an open bowl

    • Pour vanilla extract into a shallow dish and set in an out of the way place

    • Kitchen Deodorizer: Grind lemon or orange peels in the garbage disposal for a wonderful citrus smell in the kitchen

    • Don't forget the value of fresh flowers or cedar blocks for a gentle fragrance.

PLEASE NOTE: some essential oils (such as Teatree, Pines, Cedar) are toxic to birds. Do not use around them!

  • Odor Eliminators:

The following will rid rooms of odors

    • Distribute partially filled dishes of white vinegar around the kitchen to combat unpleasant cooking odors

    • Place baking soda in an open container of your choice. Good for closets, refrigerators and other small enclosed spaces

    • 2-3 slices of white bread absorbs refrigerator odors

    • DiffusersPlace unscented kitty litter placed in bowls to absorb room odors

    • Charcoal and / or coffee grounds placed in a bowl or vinegar in a cup or bowl

    • Simply light a match for a few moments or burn a candle (scented or unscented). The flame from either will "eat-up" bad smelling gases in the air. Do make sure that the candle is beewax or soy based; with a lead-free wick.
