Air Fresheners
Air fresheners are popular consumer items, as people are striving to banish bad smells from their homes and replace them with a pleasant fragrance. Consumers are not aware of the detrimental health and environmental consequences of synthetic room fresheners and fragranced cleaning products that are full volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other toxic chemicals ...
- They create unhealthy indoor air.
- They provoke skin, eye, and respiratory reactions.
- They harm the natural environment.
According to a study published in New Scientist in 1999, in homes where aerosol sprays and air fresheners were used frequently:
- mothers experienced 25 percent more headaches;
- 19 percent more likely to suffer from depression; and
- infants under six months of age had 30 percent more ear infections and 22 percent higher incidence of diarrhea.
There are myriad ways for you to eliminate smells and infuse your home with a pleasant smell without toxic chemicals.
- I gathered myriad healthy, earth-friendly alternatives that keep your home odorfree and scented using household products that you may already have.

Special Note for Bird Owners:
Please note that essential oils may not be safe for use around your pet birds. Birds are different as their respiratory system is so far superior to "mammals" and what can be healthy for us, can indeed be toxic to them. Many essentials oils may be perfectly safe for birds, but very little information is available to confirm which ones. If you have a vet who is educated on holistic treatments, please discuss with him or her potentially incorporating aromatherapy into your bird's treatment program.
- If you use essential oils as a room deodorizer, please make sure that your pet birds are removed from the area, unless you confirmed safety of the oil with your vet.
